Small businesses are a prime target for cybercriminals. In order to protect your business, it is important to understand the basics of cybersecurity and put in place some simple measures to keep your data safe. Some of this might seem like a lot, so you could always outsource your IT support in Yorkshire to help take care of it.

Small businesses often don’t have the same level of security as larger businesses, and they may not even be aware of the risks they face. So, here are a few tips for to help you keep your data secure:

Install a firewall

A firewall is a piece of hardware or software that helps to protect your network from unauthorised access. By filtering incoming and outgoing traffic, a firewall can help to prevent malicious activity such as viruses, malware, and hacking attempts.

Spam Filters

Spam filters are usually pretty good but they don’t always catch everything. Don’t open suspicious emails or attachments from people you don’t know. And be cautious of emails with poor grammar or misspellings as these are often signs of spam.

Use two-factor authentication

Two-factor authentication is an extra layer of security that requires not only a password and username but also something that only the user has access to, like a fingerprint or code sent to a mobile phone.

Train employees on security procedures

Make sure your employees know what to do in the event of a security breach. This includes knowing how to spot red flags, who to contact, and what steps to take to prevent further damage.

Update software regularly

One of the best ways to protect your business from cyber-attacks is to keep all your software up-to-date. This includes your operating system, browser, security software, and any other programs you use.

Every update usually includes patching up security vulnerabilities, so it’s important to install them as soon as possible.

Use strong passwords

Using strong passwords is one of the easiest ways to improve your cybersecurity. A strong password should be at least 8 characters long and include a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.

It’s also important to use different passwords for different accounts. That way, if one account is compromised, your other accounts will still be safe.

Backup your data

Backing up your data is important in case your computer or business is ever attacked by ransomware. By keeping backups, you can be sure that you won’t lose any important files even if your computer is locked down.

Be aware of social engineering attacks

Social engineering attacks are becoming more and more common. These types of attacks usually involve someone tricking you into giving them sensitive information or access to your computer.

For example, they might call you and pretend to be from tech support and ask for your password. Or they might send you an email with a fake link that installs malware on your computer.

Small businesses should consider outsourcing their IT support in order to protect themselves from cybercriminals. By using a cybersecurity expert, you can be sure that your data is safe and your systems are up-to-date.
