In a vehicle, certain elements must be checked regularly in order to fully guarantee the safety of the driver and his passengers. This is the case with the braking system which will tend to gradually become exhausted. The complete and sudden blackout is a fact reserved for Hollywood action movies.

What Is A Brake Rotor?

The brake rotor is the central part of the braking system. Attached to the hub of the wheel, it is also connected to pads (themselves juxtaposed with pistons) which will rub the rotor on each side in the event of activation of the mechanism.

The action is taken as follows: when the driver wishes to slow down the vehicle, the brake fluid emits pressure around the pistons which will in turn tighten the pads on the brake rotor which is integral with the wheels. This blocks the inertia process and the car stops.

The effort and the friction force because great heat in a very short time. The latter must be evacuated as quickly as possible in order to avoid any damage to the system. It is for this reason that the brake rotors are perforated over their entire length. For cutting these rotors the use of the cutting rotor is made.

How to Identify Brake Rotor Wear?

If you are not an expert in mechanics, it does not matter! Be vigilant and know how to listen for suspicious noises and unusual vibrations that predict the problem. Worn or in poor condition, the brake rotor mechanism stretches lengthwise and the danger becomes imminent.

Some warning signs can also put you on the alert:

  • The pedal is hard when your foot crashes on it;
  • The pedal is soft or elastic;
  • It sinks to the floor without resistance;
  • The brakes are jerking.

If no problem is diagnosed, be aware that the brake rotors must be replaced approximately every 80,000 km. Brake rotors and pads are things that work together. If you change one, you have to change the other. A period of adaptation is necessary. The driver must be vigilant for the first 300 km and avoid sudden braking.

Changing Your Brake Rotors: By Whom And At What Price?

It is strongly recommended to have your brake rotors and pads changed by a professional. The braking system is one of the elements which guarantee the safety of the driver. A simple mistake can have serious consequences and your insurance may also refuse to compensate you in the event of an accident.

Prices vary depending on the brand, quality and place of purchase of the product. Prices start on e-commerce sites around $ 35. In a specialist store for high-end, the bill can amount to 135 $. To be sure to provide your car with the tools necessary for the proper functioning of the braking system, do not hesitate to refer to your vehicle’s maintenance book or to ask your garage for advice.

What about Motorcycle Brake Rotors?

The braking system on a motorcycle is almost identical to that on a car. The rotor brakes are hydraulically operated, and here too, the brake fluid actuates the system. The major difference is that the brake rotors have become double at the front of the bike so that the force is best distributed on both sides of the fork. Motorcycle brake rotors are also perforated to a greater extent, allowing heat to escape more quickly.
